HR Predictions for 2022

2022 calendar

2021 saw a continuation of disruptions for many, many industries, which means 2022 will continue to require companies and HR professionals to change. Here are a few HR trends that experts have predicted for 2022:

A Continuation of Rising Internal Mobility

The “Great Resignation” has been a concern for months now -- long enough that we have some survey data to analyze. According to SHRM, 33% of surveyed workers admitted “career advancement opportunities” as one major reason they’re looking for new positions elsewhere.

LinkedIn’s annual Workplace Learning Report noted that while promotion from within was already on the rise in 2019, the percentage of jobs filled with internal hires has only increased in the last two years.

Another piece of good news from LinkedIn: employees who work for companies where internal mobility is fostered tend to stay for twice as long!

What does this mean for 2022?

  • More employees will be looking for opportunities with internal mobility.

  • HR professionals should be focusing on employee retention, upskilling, and reskilling to ensure their internal hires are prepared and engaged.

Revamping Employee Perks & Benefits

COVID and The Great Resignation continue to send ripples in multiple directions, but there have been businesses that continued to do well through the upheaval.

According to research and analysis by Gartner, the most successful S&P 500 companies invested in their talent as much as possible, even through budget cuts and other difficult decisions.

What does this look like? It will be different for each industry, and sometimes each company, but it pays to pay attention to what motivates your employees.

What does this mean for 2022?

  • Staying healthy -- especially mentally healthy -- has been on everyone’s mind, and it’s likely to become even more important in 2022.

  • Health and wellness initiatives that became popular trends in previous years are still leading ways to support employees dealing with upheaval.

  • HR professionals will be looking into benefit structures that work for the hybrid and remote workforce.

Continued Focus on Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives

Remote and flexible arrangements are definitely here to stay, which means this trend is going to be top of mind for the third year in a row.

Successfully navigating long-term remote employees will require well-thought-out and intentional planning. In some cases, specific challenges unique to remote work are causing quicker burnout and fatigue. As new policies are being written, these concerns should be factored in.

What does this mean for 2022?

  • Employees are looking for companies that manage their workforce with empathy and have clear, stated guidelines.

  • Leadership needs continual training and upskilling to effectively manage both team morale and productivity.

  • Everyone should be writing policies based on the newest best practices for avoiding digital fatigue and balancing the right level of communication within work teams.
